On September 2nd the weather was beautiful with the sun out, no wind and temperature just into the eighties. We preceded sixty plus miles down the Hudson River past the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse pictured above and West Point to Haverstraw, NY.
We continued on September 3rd in fine weather past New York City to Long Island Sound. At the Battery the water was boiling with the tide. There were Coast Guard patrol boats everywhere. We checked in by radio and were told to stay 150 yards off the Manhattan waterfront and to stay to the east side of Roosevelt Island as we headed for Hells Gate. We were early for slack current but shot through with the flood current without a problem. We were tied up at the Brewer Capri West Marine in Port Washington, Long Island by 2:30pm.
When we had called for reservations we were told that we could only stay one night but, as we checked in they said we could stay two days. Because it was Labor Day weekend we hadn’t been able to get confirmed reservation for Saturday we settled in for two days.
Saturday was beautiful and we wished that we could have moved to the east end of Long Island but our stay at Capri West was enjoyable. We put the dingy in the water and crossed the Manhasset Bay to Louie's Restaurant with Barbara and Barry Kipnis, a couple we met at the marina and are heading for Florida on their Marine Trader Trawler.
Sunday, September 4th we had planned on moving to Shelter Island but woke to small craft warnings, 3 to 5 foot seas and 20+ knots of wind out of east. We are in Port Washington for another day. The wind is suppose to drop tomorrow and we will try to move east on the Sound again. |
